Lessons from the Wilderness, Volume 62

…What We Know… Part Two

The Truth [i] [ii] [iii]

19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I see46 that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain,47 and you people48 say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.”49

21 Jesus said to her, “Believe me, woman,50 a time51 is coming when you will worship52 the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

22 You people53 worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews.54

23 But a time55 is coming—and now is here56—when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks57 such people to be58 his worshipers.59 24 God is spirit,60 and the people who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”[iv]

Exegesis [the process of careful analytical study of the Bible to produce useful interpretations of those passages or, in other words, what conclusions does the text say and support] and eisegesis [the practice of interpreting a text by imposing one's own ideas, biases, or interpretations onto it, rather than drawing out the intended meaning from the text itself]. These are our tools to the truth. When we left off last time, I asked a question:

“…And what is that truth?

Yeshua (Jesus) was and is a Jew. That truth changes everything…”

It is within this statement that our search for truth begins the search for what we know. I’ll ask you another question:

“What if what you think you know, isn’t so?”[v]

How do we find truth? Well, first and foremost, we must define the word. What is truth? The answer to this is found in how we define the process to get at the “Truth”; that process involves how we look at the following: inspiration, inerrancy, infallibility, divine assumption, free will, and of course, the supernatural aspect of transmission, which is just another way of saying who, how and what means did God employ to give us His words. This will be part of our focus today.

Let us look at this list in reverse order. No matter what else one might believe the Bible is, it is first and foremost a supernatural book. We will begin here, with a definition of “supernatural”.

Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as such:

“…supernatural

adjective

su·per·nat·u·ral ˌsü-pər-ˈna-chə-rəl

-ˈnach-rəl

1 : of or relating to an order of existence beyond the visible observable universe

especially of or relating to God or a god, demigod, spirit, or devil

2 a: departing from what is usual or normal especially so as to appear to transcend the laws of nature

b: attributed to an invisible agent (such as a ghost or spirit) …”[vi]

“…Relating to an order of existence beyond the visible observable universe…”[vii]

Let us expand our definition to include what I regard God as – a supernatural singularity:

To define a supernatural singularity, the terms must be understood separately and then combined:

  •  Singularity: A singularity is a point where something takes on an extreme or infinite value. In physics, it describes points where the laws of physics break down, such as the center of a black hole or the beginning of the Big Bang. It can also refer to a future event where technology becomes uncontrollable, leading to unforeseen changes. A Singularity can also have these attributes:
    • the state of being singular, distinct, peculiar, uncommon or unusual
    • a point where all parallel lines meet
    • a point where a measured variable reaches unmeasurable or infinite value
    • (mathematics) the value or range of values of a function for which a derivative does not exist
    • (physics) a point or region in space time in which gravitational forces cause matter to have an infinite density

  • Supernatural: This refers to phenomena or entities beyond the natural world. Supernatural elements often include ghosts, monsters, and otherworldly occurrences. Events that defy known scientific explanations are often considered supernatural.

Therefore, a supernatural singularity could be defined as:

  •  A theoretical point or event where supernatural forces or entities become infinitely powerful or concentrated, causing the laws of the natural world to break down or be dramatically altered.
  • A supernatural event or entity that defies explanation by any known laws of nature, potentially representing an extreme concentration or manifestation of powers.

·         A hypothetical future event or state where supernatural phenomena become integrated into the fabric of reality, leading to unpredictable changes.

·         Or simply, God[viii]

I wrote this once before, but it bears repeating now, in light of our subject:

“…The idea of God being a singularity has been a bane to theologists, scholars, evolutionists, cosmologists, astrophysics’, and just about everyone in between. What does it mean that YHVH is a singularity? In its simplest definition, it means that He is unique, distinct, one of a kind. He describes Himself as such in His word:

 Ps 90:1-2; Ps 93:2; Ps 102:24-27; Isa 48:12; Rom 1:20; Exo 3:14; Deu 32:40; Isa 44:6; Acts 17:24-25

These are but just a few references to the everlasting God. See also these references:

 Isa_41:4, Isa_48:12; Rev_1:8, Rev_1:11, Rev_1:17-18, Rev_2:8, Rev_22:13, Isa_44:8, Isa_37:16, Isa_37:20, Isa_42:8, Isa_43:10-11, Isa_45:6, Isa_45:21-22; Deu_4:35, Deu_4:39, Deu_6:4, Deu_32:39; 1Ti_3:16

To those groups listed above, the idea that YHVH is a singularity creates heartburn for them because it means they might have to acknowledge the one thing they do not want to do: the fact that He exists. This one point, that God is unique in all the universe means all their cherished notions of creation, of science, of physics, of morality, of philosophy, of religion, all the disciplines of man, must fall by the wayside and be re-thought in the light of an all-powerful, all-knowing, all-seeing God who can enter into time and space at will. This is not good to those who want to hold onto reason and logic, for such a be-ing[ix] as this can have no boundaries, can have nothing artificial put upon Him, cannot be manipulated or explained away.

                                                                                    He is a singularity.

There is none like Him.

So how do they deal with Him?

Some reduce Him to a 12-step program and call Him their “higher power”.

(or as Yoda would say… “the Force is strong with this one”.)

There are two aspects of such a “higher power”, this nameless and faceless force:

 1.       It is impersonal

2.       It is amoral.

To a not-yet-beliver, there is an upside to believing in a “higher power”, a “god as you imagine him to be”. What’s that you ask?

Simply this: a nameless, faceless, amoral power doesn’t make any ethical demands upon anyone.

What can a higher power be? It can be gravity, lightning, thunder, the light switch or the vacuum cleaner. It can be whatever you can imagine or not…

For example: say your “higher power” is gravity. Gravity makes no moral or ethical judgment upon a person – that is until that person jumps from a six-story window. Even then, the conclusion of that act is non-judgmental – it just becomes reality.

You go “splat”.

No personal condemnation, no moralizing, no long discussions in the middle of the night – just “splat”.  Gravity has no voice, sees nothing and hears nothing. There is a dynamic behind it for sure, yet, it only has what you could call one cause and effect. Go against it, you go “splat”. No one has ever had their conscience seared by gravity – you can behave within its influence how you want (as long as you understand the dynamic – what goes up, must come down).

The impersonal “higher power” has no ability to act upon your moral choices; hence it has no power or ability to change your behavior. You might “choose” to do the “right thing”, yet what defines the “right”? You? Your friends? Your circumstances? You see, the choice to follow a “higher power” is simply a choice to conduct yourself as you see fit. And this leads to the downside of following your “higher power”.

The house is empty. There is nobody home. No personal God, no personal redeemer. No hope, no peace, no forgiveness of sin.

This “force” – this “higher power” – is in reality nothing. It is what it is. The “god” most worshiped in America (and the rest of the world) today is this “god”; whatever YOU want it to be, whatever YOU think that this “god” should be – it is what it is…”[x]

How does all this fit into our discussion today?

The question should be, how do you look at this God? How do you see the transcendent, invisible God? How you see Him is how our other statements (those of inspiration, inerrancy, infallibility, divine assumption, free will, and the supernatural aspect of transmission) will be defined.

I told you at the beginning of this lesson, what you think you know, may not be so. I want to challenge your assumptions, your biases, you pre-conceived notions of religion, and help you replace them with Truth, but it will take work on your part.

Now tragedy has hit our family once again. A beloved brother has passed on. Circumstances lead to questions, questions that can only be found in the supernatural singularity called God, YHVH Elohim. When I know more, I will expound, but for now, who do we trust in? Who comforts, who mourns with us?

Mal 3:1-6

Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.  (2)  But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeares? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: (3) And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.  (4) Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years.  (5) And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.

(6) Foram the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

 Num 23:19

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

 Psalm 102:25-27

Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.  (26) They shall perish, but thou shalt endure yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:

(27)  But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.

 James 1:17-18

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down

from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

(18)  Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

Isa 41:4

Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning?

I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he.

 Isa 44:1-6

Yet now hear, O Jacob my servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen: (2) Thus saith the LORD that made thee, and formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; and thou, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.  (3) For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring: (4) And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.  (5)  One shall say, I am the LORD'S; and another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; and another shall subscribe with his hand unto the LORD and surname himself by the name of Israel.

(6)  Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts.

am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

Rev 1:8

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord,

which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

 Heb 13:8

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.

We have a rock, an unchanging, unmovable rock; a Supernatural Singularity that upholds us, and Who has sheltered our departed in His bosom, and will repay the evil done and balance the books of vengeance with His everlasting justice. For now, this is enough.

We will continue this conversation in Part Three and begin to address the definitions we must have on our search for Truth. I had hoped to address these all now, but my heart is heavy, and the one I love is at her home, to lay our brother to rest, so please keep her in your prayers. But know this: she is protected. The Be-ing, the Mighty One of Israel watches over her, guards her, and keeps her safe:

The Lord bdescended in the cloud and stood with him there, and cproclaimed the name of the Lord. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, d“The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and egracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast flove and faithfulness, gkeeping steadfast love for thousands,1

hforgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,

but iwho will by no means clear the guilty, jvisiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” [xi]

He is “Hayad Asher Hayad”, IAM THAT IAM.

Till next time, may we rest in this truth and find the peace we all long for.

May the Great IAM truly bless you this day my beloved

Amein

[iii] Author’s note:  Throughout these studies, I will be using the NET Bible® and the NET Notes®: within the notes you will see symbols like this: ( א B Ψ 892* 2427 sys). These are abbreviations used by the NET Bible® for identifying the principal manuscript evidence that they (authors and translators of the NET Bible®) used in translating the Old and New Testament. Please go to https://bible.org/netbible/  and see their section labeled “NET Bible Principals of Translation” for a more complete explanation on these symbols and other items pertinent to the way the NET Bible uses them. This is not to say that the NET® Bible will be our only source of God’s word but will be used as seen fit.  Also, in these studies, I have used the notes that come along with the passages I cite from the sources that I cite: these need a bit of a disclaimer though. As in all things, not everything that is footnoted is something that may I necessarily agree with [nor specifically disagree with]; the only instances will be where I may find it not compatible with what I believe pertains to any matters of the Torah or the commandments of God. I give you the notes as they are written by the authors of the material I cite from, so that you can see the information contained within them. It truly is not my place to edit or ignore them; if they state anything that is in opposition to what I teach, then so be it. I will address these issues if requested. That is not to say I should not challenge something I believe, in my humble opinion, might contradict the truth of God’s word; that I will do in the main body of my epistles for that is where my gentle dissent belongs. Most (but not all) of the differences will come when a QUOTED source displays a decidedly Western/Greek mindset, as opposed to one of the Hebraic perspectives. I must be intellectually honest – I am biased toward the God of Avraham, Issachar, and Yakob, and his son, Yeshua, the Messiah. I pray we all can find common ground as we study the Scriptures. Also, some may be put off by the length or depth of the notes; not everyone has access to the references I do, so therefore, I try to include the notes that come with the material I use, so each can see for themselves the information the originator has pointedly gleaned. I hope you avail yourselves to these inclusions – they help us to understand how the material in scripture is laid out and the thought process of the original writers of Scripture.

46 tn Grk “behold” or “perceive,” but these are not as common in contemporary English usage.

47 sn This mountain refers to Mount Gerizim, where the Samaritan shrine was located.

48 tn The word “people” is not in the Greek text but is supplied to indicate that the Greek verb translated “say” is second person plural and thus refers to more than Jesus alone.

49 map For location see Map5-B1; Map6-F3; Map7-E2; Map8-F2; Map10-B3; JP1-F4; JP2-F4; JP3-F4; JP4-F4.

50 sn Woman was a polite form of address (see BDAG 208–9 s.v. γυνή 1), similar to “Madam” or “Ma’am” used in English in different regions.

51 tn Grk “an hour.”

52 tn The verb is plural.

53 tn The word “people” is not in the Greek text, but is supplied to indicate that the Greek verb translated “worship” is second person plural and thus refers to more than the woman alone.

54 tn Or “from the Judeans.” See the note on “Jew” in v. 9.

55 tn Grk “an hour.”

56 tn “Here” is not in the Greek text but is supplied to conform to contemporary English idiom.

57 sn See also John 4:27.

58 tn Or “as.” The object-complement construction implies either “as” or “to be.”

59 tn This is a double accusative construction of object and complement with τοιούτους (toioutous) as the object and the participle προσκυνοῦντας (proskunountas) as the complement.

sn The Father wants such people as his worshipers. Note how the woman has been concerned about where people ought to worship, while Jesus is concerned about who people ought to worship.

60 tn Here πνεῦμα (pneuma) is understood as a qualitative predicate nominative while the articular θεός (theos) is the subject.
